Former Child Actress Sophie Nyweide Dies at 24

April 21, 2025 — Sophie Nyweide, the former child actress known for her standout roles in Margot at the Wedding, Mammoth, and Noah, has tragically passed away at the age of 24.

Nyweide’s family confirmed her death in an obituary published earlier this week, noting that she died on April 14, 2025. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Her loved ones described Sophie as a kind, creative, and deeply wise young woman who faced significant struggles throughout her life.

“Sophie brought light and joy to movie sets and to everyone who knew her,” her family wrote. “She had a brilliant mind, a fearless spirit, and a compassionate heart.”

Born in Burlington, Vermont, Nyweide began her acting career at a young age, quickly earning recognition for her emotional depth and natural screen presence. She later spent much of her life between Vermont and New York City.

Beyond acting, Sophie was also a gifted writer and artist, passionate about storytelling in many forms. However, according to her family, she struggled with personal trauma and mental health challenges over the years. Despite seeking professional support, Nyweide turned to self-medication and ultimately rejected treatment efforts, leading to her untimely death.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) in Sophie’s memory — a cause close to her heart.

“She was a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, friend, and a new aunt,” her obituary reads. “The world is a lesser place without her beautiful soul.”

Sophie Nyweide leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances and a reminder of the importance of compassion and mental health support. She will be deeply missed.
