Vatican Prepares for Papal Conclave as Church Awaits Successor to Pope Francis

Vatican City – May 4, 2025

The Roman Catholic Church is poised for one of its most significant transitions in over a decade, as preparations intensify for the upcoming papal conclave following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21. The conclave, set to begin on May 7, will bring together 132 cardinal electors from around the world to choose the next pope — the spiritual leader of over 1.3 billion Catholics.

While the outcome of a papal election is notoriously unpredictable, several cardinals have emerged as leading contenders, or "papabili."

Leading Candidates

Among the most frequently mentioned names is Cardinal Pietro Parolin of Italy, the Vatican’s Secretary of State and a trusted figure within the Curia. Another strong possibility is Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, admired for his charisma, pastoral approach, and alignment with Pope Francis’ inclusive vision.

Other prominent candidates include:

  • Cardinal Matteo Zuppi (Italy) – President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, known for progressive social engagement.

  • Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo (Democratic Republic of the Congo) – A strong voice on justice and ecology from the Global South.

  • Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline (France) – Advocates for interfaith dialogue and social equity.

  • Cardinal Peter Erdo (Hungary) – A more conservative choice with a scholarly background in canon law.

  • Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa (Jerusalem) – Known for deep experience in interreligious peacebuilding.

The Selection Process

The conclave, held in the historic Sistine Chapel, is a sacred and secretive process governed by centuries-old tradition. Cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote. A two-thirds majority is required to elect a new pope. Once selected, the new pontiff is introduced to the world with the famous declaration: “Habemus Papam” (“We have a pope”).

Trump’s AI “Pope” Post Sparks Online Buzz

Adding an unexpected twist to global headlines, former U.S. President Donald Trump recently shared an AI-generated image of himself dressed in papal robes, joking he might enjoy the role. The image, though meant humorously, sparked viral reactions and underscored the seriousness of the real election underway.

What’s at Stake

The election of a new pope carries profound implications for the Church’s direction — from global diplomacy and interfaith relations to teachings on climate change, LGBTQ rights, and clerical reform.

As the world watches closely, the College of Cardinals faces a critical task: selecting a spiritual leader capable of continuing Pope Francis’ legacy while navigating the evolving challenges of modern faith.
