President Trump Begins Middle East Tour with Lavish Saudi Welcome and Ambitious Economic Agenda

On May 13, 2025, President Donald Trump commenced a four-day Middle East tour, starting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the aim of strengthening U.S. ties in the region through substantial economic and defense agreements.

Grand Reception in Riyadh

Upon arrival, President Trump received an opulent welcome from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). Air Force One was escorted by Saudi fighter jets, and a ceremonial lavender carpet was laid out at the Royal Palace—a color reserved for distinguished state guests. High-ranking U.S. officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accompanied the President, along with prominent business leaders like Elon Musk, Stephen Schwarzman, and Larry Fink.

Economic and Defense Initiatives

The visit focuses on securing significant investments and defense deals. Saudi Arabia has pledged $600 billion in U.S. investments, with discussions aiming to increase this figure to $1 trillion. Key areas of collaboration include artificial intelligence, energy, and manufacturing. A notable defense agreement under consideration is a $100 billion U.S. arms package. 

These initiatives align with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan, which seeks to diversify the kingdom's economy beyond oil dependence. President Trump's agenda includes attending the Saudi-U.S. Investment Forum and the Gulf Cooperation Council Summit to further these objectives.

Regional Diplomacy and Strategic Goals

Beyond economic matters, President Trump aims to address regional security concerns, including Iran's nuclear ambitions and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Efforts to revive the Abraham Accords are also on the agenda, with the goal of normalizing relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. However, Saudi officials have indicated that progress on Palestinian statehood and U.S. security guarantees are prerequisites for such normalization. 

Controversies and Criticisms

The trip has not been without controversy. President Trump's acceptance of a $400 million luxury jet from Qatar for use as Air Force One has drawn criticism from Senate Democrats, who argue it may violate laws regarding gifts from foreign governments.

Additionally, the exclusion of Israel from the itinerary has raised concerns about U.S. alignment in the region, especially given recent developments such as the ceasefire announcement with Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis.
